Mr Stephen Trapmore MBE
Honorary Degree of Doctor of Sport in recognition of his significant contribution to sustained excellence and achievement in elite sport across three decades, initially as a competitor and more recently as a coach and contributor to the rowing community.
Alumnus Steve Trapmore (BEng Hons Electronics and Computing 1997) is an English rower and Olympic champion, winning the Gold Medal for the GB Men's eight at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, a feat that took 16 years to be equaled by the GB Men's eight in Rio 2016.
Steve's rowing career began just 10 years prior to his gold medal win, when he was only 15. As a senior athlete he trained with the Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association whilst studying for his degree at Nottingham Trent University.
Since his Olympic success, Steve was appoined Head Coach of the Rowing Club at Imperial College, London, where he transfromed the programme into the most successful team in the country securing wins at Henley Royal Regatta.
Steve was awareded his MBE in 2001 for services to rowing and is currently Chief Coach of Cambridge Unviersity Boat Club, which he led to victory in the infamous 2012 Boat Race.
