Paul Carr – Composer, director of opera and an inspiration for students and other performers.

Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music (HonDMus) in recognition of his significant contribution to music at a national level.

Paul followed both of his parents into opera - his mother was Una Hale, an Australian soprano and his father, Martin, was a Covent Garden stage manager and later theatre consultant.

He embarked on a stage design course at Croydon College, then won a scholarship to study singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  

For some years he was a stage manager for opera, and since 2011 he has directed productions for companies including English National Opera and Glyndebourne.  His talent as a composer has emerged and flourished throughout his career, with chamber and orchestral works, and pieces for film and television. His Ave Maria
was written for Nottingham Trent University Choir, who have also performed other
works of his, including his celebrated Requiem for an Angel.
