The Very Reverend David Leaning, Dean of Southwell (deceased)

HonMA in recognition of his work in Nottinghamshire over more than 35 years, in Warsop as Archdeacon of Newark and as Dean of the Cathedral Church. In particular, the accolade marked his contribution and enthusiasm towards channelling young people's participation in the community.

Brackenhurst was chosen to host the occasion because of its historic links with the local community - and the presentation took place on a campus which overlooks Southwell Minister.

The Minster is the beautiful Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Southwell, which covers Nottinghamshire and parts of South Yorkshire. David has been Provost there since 1991 and Dean since 2000.

In his career leading up to his appointment at Southwell, he had previously served as Curate of Gainsborough, Rector of Warsop and Archdeacon of Newark.

At the Minster he has overseen developments such as the new refectory and shop, the creation of an education centre and visitor centre in the Old Grammar School, the establishment of the Sacrista Prebend as a centre for retreats and conferences and the unveiling of the new Great West Window.

He has also promoted a very successful educational programme called Time Travelling, which involves some 6,000 school children descending on the Minster for two weeks in the year - the largest educational outreach programme of any cathedral in the country.
