His Honour Judge Avik Mukherjee - NTU alumnus, honorary professor and circuit judge

Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of his significant contribution to the legal profession.

After graduating from Nottingham Polytechnic in 1989, His Honour Judge Avik Mukherjee was called to the bar at Gray’s Inn in 1990. Upon completion of his bar exams, he presented himself to No 1 High Pavement Chambers, Nottingham, where he established himself as an effective advocate.

After 25 years prosecuting and defending in complex cases, Avik decided on a new challenge, and was appointed as a recorder to the circuit bench in 2009. In 2015 he became a circuit judge, based at Birmingham Crown Court.

Avik began mentoring students at Nottingham Trent University in 2014, and in 2016 he was made an honorary professor. He also became a Diversity and Community Relations Judge, working in the community to give young people an insight into the criminal justice system. In 2017 he was appointed to the Mental Health Review Tribunal, a role he performs alongside his work as a circuit judge.
