Open Dome Event
The Sun and the Honeybee

Tue, 28 Feb, 2017 20:00 - 22:00

Humans know since millennia how to use the Moon, Sun and stars to navigate. But we sometimes are surprised to see how much the Sun and Moon is used in the animal and insect kingdom for navigational purposes and more.

Dr. M Bencsik (NTU) will be talking about how the humble honey bee uses the solar position for navigation and how it exhibits this using a waggle dance. He will explain how the Sun plays a major role in the bees live through such light related movements or phototaxis. This presentation will be followed by a brief introduction to what is visible in this month's sky.

Booking is required for this event. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.
