Sir Winston Churchill celebrated by Nottingham artist
16 May 2016
Joy Pitts (MA Fine Art 2005) has completed a label portrait of Sir Winston Churchill to coincide with the issue of the new five-pound note featuring Sir Winston Churchill later in 2016. Joy has collaborated with Savile Row tailors Henry Poole & Co, shirt makers Turnbull & Asser of Jermyn St, London, and Lock & Co Hatters, London.
The work will be exhibited in the three London stores throughout the year. You can follow the process of the portrait being made on Joy Pitt’s Facebook page.
Joy has also completed a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II inspired by the Queen’s 2014 speech, which recollected the Christmas Truce of 1914 and other peaceful ends to conflict during the Twenty First century. The portrait was created using names taken from a Derbyshire War Memorial which were machine woven onto tapes and assembled using only dressmaker pins.
The collection of used labels is on-going, so please contact Joy if you would like your used garment labels to become part of an artwork.
