16 September 2013
Alumnus Dr Yu Xiong (PhD 2008) has recently been elected to China’s equivalent of the House of Lords.
Dr Xiong is a member of the international affairs committee for the provincial CPPCC for Chongqing, which has a population of more than 32 million people. The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has representatives at five levels - national, provincial, city, county and town.
The role involves conducting research and advising the government and other organizations on international activities and issues. Dr Xiong, a senior lecturer in operations management at the University of East Anglia’s Norwich Business School, is the only Chinese academic in the UK to hold such an appointment. He is also a founding board member of the China UK Collaboration Innovation Network, run by the UK government’s Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.
Dr Xiong said: “I am very happy to have this role and to officially be a part of China’s political organisation. For the last 10 years I have been encouraging collaboration between the UK and China, and I will continue to do my best to strengthen the relationship between these two great nations.”
