About Itaru Dekio
Position: Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Medical Centre East at Tokyo Women's Medical University
Field of work: Skin microbiology
Company's main business: Education and health
Current role activities: Dermatology clinics (consultant), research (principal investigator), teaching
How has your career developed since leaving NTU? The masters experience added a new computational element to my research activity on skin microbiology. Although my current position is similar to what it was before NTU, my research work attracts much larger attention in the field, which resulted in chances to give invited lectures in other countries.
How has your experience at Nottingham Trent - the learning environment, academic and social life - shaped or helped you in your career? NTU's way of teaching was very systematic and reasonable, and as an academic myself it was a valuable experience. I really enjoyed the opportunities NTU provided for networking with other international students.
What has been the highlight of your career or personal achievements to date? Discovery of proteomic switch of acne bacteria, which is possibly the central mechanism of acne formation (2013).
What are your plans for the future? I hope to develop my career as an academic to further deepen my research.
