NTU Alumni Ambassador for Nordic & Baltic countries:
Garry Parker (LLB Hons Law 1993 & Legal Practice Course 1994)
I became an Alumni Ambassador because I have a good network and like to get events going with good people. Life is what you make it, so don't be a stranger and keep in touch with your alma mater! You never know what might come out of it.
Email email@example.com for details of how to join Garry and other members of the NTU Alumni Nordic and Baltic group.
Position: Chairman, British & Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce in Finland ry/rf
Company’s main business: International Trade
What does your current role involve? Keeping our business members happy and steering them in the right direction to help them grow and be more profitable internationally in any of the 53 Commonwealth countries.
How has your career developed since leaving Nottingham Trent? I've done quite a few things, really. From UK legal practice after the sandwich course / LPC, to business policy in Brussels as a lobbyist for British business; back to the UK in a similar role; plus running the family specialist joinery / furniture manufacturing business; and then, for the last seven years, doing business facilitation in Finland with my own small firm, and establishing a chamber of commerce.
How has your experience at Nottingham Trent - the learning environment, academic and social life - shaped or helped you in your career? It all 'clicked' for me when I joined the European Law Students' Association (ELSA) at NTU. As a result of that I eventually got to go to Brussels, brought back the International Council Meeting of ELSA to Nottingham in 1995, with the support of Nottingham Law School - we had over 300 law students and young lawyers from over 40 countries. Through ELSA, I met my future wife in Istanbul, and made great friends in the UK and throughout Europe.
How friendly and supportive an environment did you find Nottingham Trent? Very friendly with a sociable atmosphere, and easy to get around.
What has been the highlight of your career or personal achievements to date? Family and good friends, both professional and personal.
What are your plans for the future? To return to the UK and resume public affairs in London.
