Allan WattsNTU Alumni Channel Islands Ambassador:
Allan Watts (LLB Hons Law 2007)

I haven’t met an alumnus who is not proud of having attended the university and being an ambassador is not only a privilege, it is also a practical way of maintaining that bond that exists among those who went there. As we develop in our careers, we gain new skills, experience and knowledge that can be shared through this alumni group. It is also an opportunity to maintain old friendships, create new ones, and to promote the university we are all so very proud of.

Email alumni@ntu.ac.uk for details of how to join Allan and other members of the NTU Alumni Channel Islands group.

About Allan

Position: Director, ORCHID

Your company's main business: Marketing and communicationsWhat does your current role involve? I specialise in advising clients on matters relating to their privacy, and communicating during a crisis situation. I also train individuals and organisations in working with the media. I am responsible for legal and HR matters for my organisation.

How has your career developed since leaving Nottingham Trent? I studied through distance learning to augment my journalistic skills as head of News at ITV. Subsequently I wanted to use my degree to greater effect and joined Orchid as a Director two years after graduating.

How has your experience at Nottingham Trent shaped or helped you in your career? Nottingham Trent, and in particular Nottingham Law School, is a fantastic environment in which to learn. It was never my intention to practice law, but the academic foundation I achieved, and the broad mix of people I studied with gave me new professional and social skills that have transformed the way I approach management of a business and teams of people.

How friendly and supportive an environment did you find Nottingham Trent? As a “weekend” student I was amazed at the camaraderie and bond that quickly formed between a large group of people who dispersed every Sunday evening to the four corners of Europe and beyond. The tutors helped bring us together as a unit; were supportive at all times when working remotely and helped to ensure a collegiate approach to our studies.

What has been the highlight of your career or personal achievements to date? Successfully steering clients through some very serious and potentially damaging crises and seeing their relief when they emerge successful in protecting their reputation or brand.

What are your plans for the future?  We have steered our business through one of the worst economic downturns in memory. Our objective now is to grow our business and create an environment in which our existing team develops, and opportunities for new staff are created.
