Heading back to Nottingham

4 November 2013

GraduationStephen DixonYou might be pondering the idea of heading back up to Nottingham to visit your old stomping grounds but wondering about a decent excuse to make the journey? How about heading up for a distinguished lecture? Admittedly, going to a lecture at NTU as an alumnus is NOT the same as dragging yourself out of your bed with a hangover and sitting down just as things start!

The series of distinguished lectures are wonderful hour long sessions with superb speakers, all in the luxury of the new lecture theatres. A wonderful way to soak in some free information, keep informed with current events and thinking and MOST importantly, no essays to write afterwards!

There's a whole series of lectures available every year. I am very much looking forward to attending a lecture on 26 November on the global influence of China. Sometimes I attend the drinks and chats with the distinguished guest but on this occasion I will turn up in my jeans, plonk myself down and just absorb the knowledge. A wonderful way to spend an evening and honestly, I can't wait!

It's hard to imagine that ANOTHER graduation session is almost upon us. It seems a very short time since the summer graduations in that glorious weather. I'm sure the more blustery conditions won't take the edge off the day for our new alumni who are graduating on 23 November and if YOU'RE one of those, don't forget to attend the alumni stall to pick up your free goody bag.

What always makes the autumn ceremony extra special is the award being given to the Alumnus of the Year, Joe Sargison. It's a great recognition of the work done by our alumni both in and out of the field of academia and I'm delighted that Joe's Balls to Poverty campaign is getting recognition from NTU.

I hope you're all well and surviving the rotten weather - and if you're around in Nottingham on the 26th do come and say hello to me at the lecture!

All best wishes,

Stephen
